Several codes have been developed to capture within short computation time different aspects of additive manufacturing.
Thermal analysis
GreenMelt
Part-Scale Ultra-Fast Melt Pool Prediction in Additive Manufacturing for Latent Heat and Marangoni Convection
Features
- Green’s function thermal model for fast melt pool evaluation in LPBF and laser surface scanning
- Accounts for nonlinearities by adding distributed heat sources
- Latent heat (solidification and vaporization)
- Marangoni convection
- Physically based procedures to determine the distribution of additional heat sources to capture nonlinearities
- Neumann boundary conditions available
- Validated on single track numerical experiments against Computation Fluid Dynamic
- Standalone melt pool calculation is available provided material parameters and an average temperature upstream the heat source (i.e., in the solid ahead the melt pool)
- For part-scale calculation, currently a single back-and-forth scanning strategy is available for cuboid domains

TesselAM
TesselAM is a very fast algorithm for the computation of the formation of microstructure in rapid solidification and further evolution
Features
- Operates at grain scale, not dendritic scale
- Physically based geometrical procedure to capture competitive growth in solidification
- Based on Voronoi tessellations
- Dramatic reduction of degrees of freedom with respect to cellular automata and phase field approaches
- Microstructures similar to those from conventional approaches are obtained
